Last night my girlfriend and I saw David Byrne & St. Vincent on the second leg of the tour promoting their 2012 album, Love This Giant. Byrne and Clark (St. Vincent) performed with an incredible brass ensemble in a lightly (but expertly) choreographed show of songs from the album, interspersed with St. Vincent songs, Talking Heads songs, and David Byrne’s solo work. The two stars worked unbelievably well together, and the whole band was tight and having the time of their lives. Most remarkable was Byrne’s willingness to slip out of the limelight and serve as a back-up singer on Clark’s songs. They clearly have great respect for one another’s work, and it was really touching to see the much older, more experienced, and more acclaimed of the two defer to his partner. And she earned it.
I first saw St. Vincent live in a tiny bar touring her first album, Marry Me. Then, I never would have expected to see her on stage, singing probably my very favorite song, “This Must Be the Place,” with the man who wrote it. Wow.
