I absolutely love writing essays and reviews and conducting interviews and seeing those things in print. But there is some special, kid-like joy in seeing a story published.
I have a very short story called “Useless Animals” in the latest issue of Word Riot, alongside some really fine work. Mine is the only piece of flash fiction in the issue that doesn’t mention the moon—I didn’t get the memo! My piece is here. I wrote it in Session II of the Yale Writers’ Conference, in a class led by Molly Gaudry. It’s a huge honor to be published in Word Riot, which has printed wonderful stories by amazing writers like Brandi Wells, Roxane Gay, and many, many others.
